History Of The Harrington

Think of the word ‘Harrington’ and the image that immediately comes to mind is that of the classic iconic style of light casual jacket. The two have been inextricably linked since the 1960’s, when Ryan O’Neal starred in 60’s soap Peyton Place as Rodney Harrington, regularly sporting the casual jacket style.

The jacket was originally designed primarily as a golfer’s jacket; lightweight and showerproof, allowing enough movement with its high sleeves and deep pocketed design however it soon became a staple piece in fashionable young gent’s wardrobes.

Throughout the decades following the 1960’s some of the World’s greatest style icons have become synonymous with the Harrington jacket. Frank Sinatra and James Dean were among the first wearers of this iconic jacket which has been spotted more recently on Alex Turner and Daniel Craig. However, there are two timeless style icons with whom the Harrington jacket will always be associated.

Paul Newman’s style was undoubtedly strong and still used as a reference point today; he exuded a cool yet comfortable and effortlessly sharp style. His off-duty style often saw him pairing well-worn jeans and penny loafers with a Harrington jacket to create a classic yet masculine look. His sharp sartorial style will maintain his iconic status for years to come, and uphold him as a true timeless style hero.

In the US, the Harrington gained popularity when Steve McQueen wore the style in the 1968 film ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’. He also appeared on the cover of Life magazine in one and his association with this stylish jacket is still legendary today.

The Harrington is also synonymous with Ben Sherman’s history; the style has always been a key staple for the youth sub culture in the UK over many generations and has therefore become integral to Ben Sherman.

The piece is a core within every collection for Ben Sherman and yet each season the design is reinterpreted with use of new colour ways, silhouettes or contemporary style details creating exciting on trend takes on the classic.
